Learn more about the most effective ways to treat your shoulder or elbow pain.

Your shoulders and elbows are held together by various tissues. The ligaments connect the bones to other bones, and the tendons connect bones with muscles. The cartilage (tissue) covers the ends of your bones and helps them glide against each other during movement.

If part of the joint is damaged, and the bone or tissue around it is affected, you may have pain, weakness, numbness and other symptoms that make it hard to use your arm or shoulder.

What Causes Shoulder and Elbow Pain?

Since the shoulder and elbow are frequently utilized joints in our body, they are commonly prone to injury or disorder. Repetitive overhead movements in some sports and jobs and degenerative conditions are common causes of shoulder and elbow pain.

Common Conditions that Cause Shoulder and Elbow Pain

Shoulder and Elbow Fractures

The bones in the shoulder and elbow joints can fracture or break due to a fall, sports injury or accident. Such injuries may damage muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves surrounding the shoulder or elbow joint. Shoulder and elbow fractures require immediate care to heal and prevent permanent damage to the bone or surrounding soft tissues.

Shoulder and Elbow Arthritis

Seniors and those with prior history of elbow and shoulder problems are most at risk for arthritis. The most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Osteoarthritis is a condition that generally affects people over age 50. It is caused by cartilage degeneration or a loss of cartilage, causing friction between the bones and pain in the joints.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a disease of the joint linings. The body’s immune system attacks the healthy tissue and causes swelling in the joints.

Shoulder instability

When the ligaments, tendons, and muscles around the shoulder become stretched, torn or detached, dislocations can occur repeatedly. Shoulder instability is the inability of these tissues to keep the ball of the shoulder joint centred in the shoulder socket. It can be due to a traumatic injury, overuse or repetitive motions. Pain and weakness are the main symptoms and. If left untreated, it can lead to arthritis of the shoulder joint.

Shoulder Labrum (Cartilage) Tear

A labrum tear occurs when the soft cartilage in the shoulder socket is torn. It can be due to a fall, traumatic injury or repetitive motions. With shoulder labrum tears, you might feel pain when you reach over your head. The other symptoms may include shoulder weakness and limited range of motion.

Rotator Cuff Tear

A rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons in your shoulder holding your arm in place. When one or more rotator cuff tendons is torn, it will be difficult for you to raise and move your arm. You may experience shoulder pain and arm weakness. A torn rotator cuff is often ue to an acute injury such as a fall or overuse.

Frozen shoulder

Frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, is a condition that affects the shoulder joint. It can cause severe and painful restrictions of motion. If the condition is not treated, it can worsen with time.

Dislocated Elbow

Elbow dislocation happens when the bones that make up the joint are forced out of alignment. It usually occurs when a person falls onto an outstretched hand or from a traumatic injury such as a car accident. Patients can experience considerable pain, swelling and inability to bend the arm.

Tennis Elbow

Tennis elbow is a painful condition of inflammation in the tendons connected to the bony bump on the elbow’s outer side. It is caused by repetitive motions of the wrist and arm. The condition generally affects those who regularly participate in sports like tennis, occupations like carpentry or hobbies like gardening.

Golfer’s Elbows

Golfer’s elbow is an inflammation that causes pain where the tendons of your forearm muscles attach to the bony bump on the inside of your elbow. Golfer’s elbow happens when you repeatedly use your wrist and arm to bend, grasp or twist things, causing wrist, elbow and forearm pain over time.

Signs and symptoms of Shoulder and Elbow Pain include:

Unable to lift your arm above the head

Cannot bend or straighten your elbow

Pain when moving your shoulder or elbow

Pain when using your shoulder or elbow

Pain in the shoulder or elbow when you are at rest

Sensations of pins and needles and burning pain in your arm or shoulder

Weakness that gets increasingly worse

Ongoing or worsening pain that develops over time
